Mary Douglas, Founder and Director

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 30th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-school children received the love, nurturing, and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the "world class" training that she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where "only mothers" teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institutes, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and in July 2004, she was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. WHAT A SCHOOL! Ms. Mary has also completed the Music Together teacher training program.

South Shore School of Dance Testimonials

"My daughters, Emily (14) and Katie (12) have been involved with the South Shore School of Dance for seven years now and have never been happier or learned so much. South Shore offers dance in all art forms and has an Irish step program that is top notch and pressure free. The past schools my daughters attended were either very competitive or didn't offer Irish step at all. With South Shores "competition optional" attitude both my girls have built great spirit and pride in their abilities as Irish step dancers and have developed a self esteem that will last them a lifetime. From their very first class we knew they had found a school in which they would grow and better develop their talents and self-confidence. The South Shore School of Dance is a perfect fit for us."

"My daughter has attended the South Shore School of Dance since September of 2001. Throughout her 9 years as a student of SSSD, she has grown and evolved as a ballet dancer under the stellar direction of Mary Douglas. As patrons of the New York City Ballet, we regularly attend performances at Lincoln Center, and in my opinion, the choreographers and teachers at the South Shore School of Dance are second to none. I consider myself fortunate to belong to SSSD, not just for the superb dance education; but for the lifelong friendships, camaraderie and beautiful memories sustained in this loving and attentive environment."
